The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when Eric Eiland hit an RBI double to left field that allowed Derek Marshall to score giving the Thunder (15-23) the 1-0 lead.

The Roadrunners (17-22) answered back in the bottom of the fifth against Thunder starter Frank James.  Adam Gordon reached on after a dropped fly ball that allowed him to reach second.  After a fielder’s choice off the bat of C.J. Beatty, Robert Matlock hit an RBI single to center field that allowed Gordon to score tying the game.  Gabe Memmert then followed with a two-run single that scored Beatty and Matlock making it 3-1 Edinburg.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Stantrel Smith hit an RBI ground out that allowed Matlock to score from third.  With two outs, Steven Wright hit a two-run single to center field scoring Memmert and Osiel Flores from second and third extending the Roadrunners lead 6-1.

McAllen, TX – The McAllen Thunder of the North American League announced today that the contract of right-handed pitcher Robert Roth has been purchased by the Atlanta Braves.

Patriots Post Record Year in Athletics

20110624_Rudy-Gonzalez-Wrestling_001Simply put, it was a great year for the athletics program at Veterans Memorial High School. At the Rio Grande Valley Sports Banquet held last week the Patriots were nominated for multiple categories, including Boys Program of the Year, Moment of the Year, Coach of the Year and Girls Team of the Year. Though no actual hardware came home, the nominations themselves proved 2010-11 was a special year.

It all started in the fall when Patriots’ football, volleyball and girls cross-country emerged from the regular season as district champions. It was about as good of a start to the school year as any program could ask for.

Headlining the success were those under the Friday night lights. Coach David Gilpin's football team went 10-2 on the year, were named district co-champs and won their first ever bi-district game. All three successes—record, co-champs and bi-district win—were firsts for the Patriots.
