Soccer playoff action over for Shary, Juarez

20110408-J-L-v-Valley-View-Boys-Soccer-037In one final swoop every local boys and girls soccer team was removed from the playoffs. Just like that – the soccer season is over.

All felt the disappointment of failing to advance but none more than the Sharyland and Juarez-Lincoln boys. Both programs made fantastic runs in 2010, both dominated their districts in equally embarrassing fashion in 2011 and both went home early.

Sharyland Rattlers ranked no. 5 in state

20110401-Baseball-Shary-at-LaJoya-01Last year it was McHi; this year it is Sharyland.

In 2010, the McHi Bulldogs were the dominating baseball team of the Valley. Backed by strong pitching, the Bulldogs ruled District 30-5A, positioned themselves as one of the top teams in the state, and then made a solid run to the regional semifinals.

Scholar-Athlete Signs with Valparaiso University

20110324_VMHS_KentWarren_PT_82Veterans Memorial High School’s football and basketball star player Kent Warren signed scholarship papers today (Thursday) with Valparaiso University. Although the star athlete will play football for the Valpo Crusaders, his scholarship is for his academic abilities, not his athletic skills. Warren is ranked third in his high school class academically. Math is one of his many strong suits, says the TMSEA two-time State Champion in individual calculator applications. He was also a member of the school’s UIL Calculator Applications team that won first in state. In football he was named to the All-District Team two years, while in basketball he was named to the All-Valley Team and twice to First Team All-District. He was also named to the Academic All-State Team for both football and basketball.

Sharyland prepared for playoff run

20110318_SOCCER_SHS_vs_McHi_Boys_JB__0238When Tuesday's game with La Joya ended, the ensuing celebration of Sharyland was, more than anything, a bit anti-climatic, a bit dull. Besides a couple high-fives and a team picture, the Rattlers treated their back-to-back-to-back district championship run as though it was just another game.

What’s the catch? This is only the beginning. District championships are nice, but now starts the real goal: another deep run in the playoffs.
