Coming into Week 2, the gossip surrounding the Sharyland Rattlers was they had “speed to kill.” On Friday night, the visiting Flour Bluff Hornets found that out and more in a 48-18 pounding by Fred Sanchez’s young but extremely talented team.
At least for tonight, that speed to kill came by way of junior wide receiver CJ Cavazos. The undersized but extremely quick athlete burned the Hornets for three first half touchdowns grabs. Cavazos, who isn’t shy about burning a corner and then verbally letting him know about it afterwards, scored on touchdown passes of 30, 10 and 35 yards.
Cavazos’ provider, quarterback Tres Barrera , was full of confidence as he connected with his top receiver or, if needed, was not afraid to tuck the ball and run, picking up some nifty yardage.
For their part, Flour Bluff struggled in nearly every facet of the game, particularly getting hurt by special teams play. On at least three occasions, the kick return team muffed the return catch, allowing one to be recovered by the Rattlers. That particular dropped ball set up Cavazos ten-yard touchdown catch on a beautiful corner route in the northeast side of the end zone.
Defensively, the Rattlers dominated allowing Flour Bluff only two series (when the first team defense was in) where they freely moved the ball: the first series of the second quarter and first series of the second half.
Entering into their bye week next week, the Rattlers are now 3-0 with plenty of momentum as they ready themselves to defend their district title. With a confident quarterback and a receiver like CJ Cavazos, the Rattlers are ready.
