The Hidalgo Pirates finally got a win as they rolled over the Juarez-Lincoln Huskies 21-7 Thursday night in La Joya. The Huskies are still looking for their first win as they drop to 0-5.
The Pirates got on the board first and continued to put pressure on the Huskies defense with a steady diet of slashing runs up the middle by running back J.D. Rodriguez and two very nice 30-plus yard catches by wide receiver Jonathan Cantu. The Pirates held a comfortable, if not huge, 14-0 lead after Silvestre Gutierrez scampered into the end-zone with 48 seconds left in the first half.
Hidalgo running back Joseph Meyers put the Pirates even further out of reach of the hapless Huskies with a darting 15-yard run up the middle to make it 21-0. The rest of the third and fourth quarters were uneventful and both teams struggled with turnovers. The game was all but over when the Huskies finally punched it in with a 12-yard run by Josio Villareal to make the score a bit more respectable.
Hidalgo’s next game will be against Mercedes who, the following week, will then face Juarez-Lincoln who hopes their upcoming bye week will be rejuvenating.
