Well it was close for at least a quarter. The Sharyland Rattlers entered Tom Landry Stadium last night, coming off it first district loss in three seasons. Apparently, a date with a struggling Mission squad was all that was needed as the Rattlers crushed their cross-town rivals, 52-23.
Mission came out competing in the first quarter, trading punches with the Rattlers. Fred Sanchez’s team fell behind 10-7 just before the first quarter ended and then 45 unanswered points. Nearly every Rattler player got in the game and the team used four different quarterbacks.
Next week, Sharyland hosts a 2-6 La Joya team. In the midst of that game, the Rattlers will be hoping for Donna Redskin upset over Memorial as Shary still has a chance of at least a co-district title.
Mission, meanwhile, has seen its playoff hopes taken from its hands. They visit Nikki Rowe next week before finishing the season with Donna.
Memorial 63 Nikki Rowe 35: Almost a hundred points combined in this one. Memorial is ready to sweep the district while the Warriors are competing for that last playoff spot. Mustangs visit the Redskins while Rowe hosts Mission.
Donna 28 Palmview 18: The Lobos really needed this one but aren’t entirely out of the race. They just have to win their next two (McHi and Memorial) and hope Donna and Rowe lose.
McHi 38 La Joya 3: Bulldogs are playing some great football while the Lobos need to find some offense.
East 28 Veterans Memorial 7: Despite the ravaging injuries, the Patriots continue to fight as a long season begins to wind down. The Wildcats, meanwhile, are now ready for the showdown with Edcouch-Elsa for the district championship next week..
Hidalgo 31 Roma 28: The Pirates are separating themselves from the bottom of half of the district, preparing themselves for a playoff appearance. Unfortunately, they visit Rio Grande City and Weslaco East to finish the season.
Edcouch-Elsa 42 Rio Grande City 21: The Rattlers aren’t quite a district powerhouse as the Yellow Jackets humbled the surprise team of the district. E-E faces East next week for the district championship while RGC has Hidalgo.
Juarez-Lincoln 24 Valley View 0: The Tigers are awful but the Huskies actually have a slight chance at the playoffs. The team needs to win its next two (Roma and Rio Grande City) and hope the Rattlers do as well.
