Last Monday High School volleyball playoffs kicked off with the Sharyland Rattlers (31-14) defeating Laredo United for the 30-5A Bi-District Championship which the Rattlers won in four games.
Sharyland started slow, dropping the first game 17-25 and going down by 5 at the start of the second game. But once the lady Rattlers settled in they returned to the form that made them such an imposing team all year winning the next three games 25-17, 25-15, 25-20.
Sharyland’s next opponent will be Harlingen South on Friday at the Harlingen South high school gym. The Lady Hawks took down Brownsville Rivera Tuesday night 25-17, 18-25, 25-20, 21-25, 17-15.
Veterans out of post-season play
Despite an impressive season that saw the Veterans Memorial Lady Patriot volleyball team put together a 26-6 season record and finishing in second place in 32-4A competition after dropping their last game against Edcouch-Elsa, the Lady Patriots’ journey, at least this season, has come to an end.
Veterans Memorial was matched up against Tuloso-Midway in a Class 4A bi-district match. Although the Lady Patriots started strong by winning the first game 15-25, Tuloso-Midway pulled it together to take the next three games 25-7, 25-22, 25-14.
The Lady Patriots’ big hitters played well, even in the loss. Shania Gilpin had eight kills and 12 digs while JeNeva Jimenez recorded 14 kills and 15 digs. Katie Rodriguez also put in 16 digs and five kills while Aliza Salinas had 12 assists.
