Monday’s “Big Six” Boys and Girls Basketball Rankings

Today’s “Big Six” Rankings:

Boys Basketball

1. Sharyland

Friday’s “Big Six” ranking: 1

District Record: 4-1 (District 30-5A standing: tied for first with Nikki Rowe and McHi)

Last Game: Beat Mission, 65-39.

Team Notes: Make it four in a row for a very hot Rattler team. However, a schedule that is itself beginning to heat up will put Sharyland to the test in its next two games. Hosting a La Joya squad who will be desperate to keep its playoff chances within reach will test Shary’s ability to not be complacent. Of course, the real test will come Friday when visiting McHi. A win will push the three-way tie down to two with a rematch with Rowe following the next Tuesday.

Next two games: vs. La Joya, Jan. 17; at McHi, Jan. 20.

2. Juarez-Lincoln

Friday’s “Big Six” ranking: 2

District Record: 5-4 (District 32-4A standing: tied for fourth with Weslaco East)

Last Game: Beat Rio Grande City, 80-77 OT.

Team Notes: The Huskies were a bit rusty in the second and third quarters versus RGC but they were unbelievable in the first and got it done in the fourth and in overtime. Coach Montolvo was somewhat disappointed in his team but they have the potential to clear up their position in district. The Huskies’ next two games are critical. A win over East will give Juarez the tiebreaker over the Wildcats if the playoff slots come down to that. A victory over Vets will keep the Patriots from having the tiebreaker.

Next two games: vs. Weslaco East, Jan. 17; at Veterans Memorial, Jan. 20.

3. Palmview

Friday’s “Big Six” ranking: 1

District Record: 3-2 (District 30-5A standing: tied for fourth with McAllen Memorial)

Last Game: Beat Donna 83-53.

Team Notes: The win over Donna snapped a two-game losing streak for the once surging Lobos. Palmview is still in a decent position, but a win over McHi would be huge for them.

Next two games: vs. McHi, Jan. 17;

Girls Basketball

1. Veterans Memorial

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 1

District Record: 10-1 (District 32-4A standing: 2)

Last Game: Beat Edcouch-Elsa, 70-36.

Team Notes: Another easy win for the Patriots. Now the showdown with Hidalgo…

Next two games: at Hidalgo, Jan. 17; vs. Juarez-Lincoln, Jan. 20.

2. Sharyland

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 2

District Record: 5-1 (District 30-5A standing: tied for first with Nikki Rowe and McHi)

Last Game: Beat Mission, 31-21.

Team Notes: Shary faces a tough visit from La Joya though the Lady Rattlers have traditionally held the upper hand in the series. If they can survive the Lady Coyotes than a huge visit to McHi comes Friday.

Next two games: vs. La Joya, Jan. 17; at McHi, Jan. 20.

3. La Joya

Last week’s “Big Six” ranking: 3

District Record: 4-3

Last Game: Lost to McHi, 56-49.

Team Notes: The Lady Coyotes are in the midst of their toughest part of their schedule as they face the district’s top teams back-to-back-to-back. A tough loss to the Lady Bulldogs only gets tougher as they have to visit Sharyland tomorrow.

Next two games: at Sharyland, Jan. 17; vs. Nikki Rowe, Jan. 20.
