Today’s “Big Six” Rankings:

Boys Basketball “Big Six” Rankings

1. Sharyland

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 1

District Record: 6-1 (District 30-5A Standing: T-First with Nikki Rowe)

Last Game: Beat McHi, 68-44.

Team Notes: Thrashing of McHi sets up a potential epic rematch with Nikki Rowe. The Warriors will have to be ready for a strong Rattler home crowd. Last time these two teams met Rowe squeaked by, 57-54.

Next two games: vs. Nikki Rowe, Jan. 24; at Donna, Jan. 27.

2. Palmview

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 3

District Record: 5-2 (District 30-5A Standing: Third)

Last Game: Beat Memorial, 49-47.

Team Notes: You could argue last week was the greatest weak in the history of Palmview Basketball. Andy Saenz’s squad took down McHi and Memorial, two of the district’s traditional powerhouse programs. Whether the Lobos can actually compete for the district championship remains to be seen, but they are playing as well as anyone. As a result, Palmview jumped Juarez-Lincoln in this week’s rankings.

Next two games: vs. Mission, Jan. 24; vs. La Joya, Jan. 27.

3. Juarez-Lincoln

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 2

District Record: 5-5 (District 32-4A Standing: T-Fourth with Weslaco East)

Last Game: Lost to Veterans Memorial, 62-45.

Team Notes: The Patriots beat Juarez easily on Friday as the Huskies struggled shooting. On top of that, J-L let its defense get stretched, allowing easy buckets by Vets. If Juarez wants a playoff spot, Tuesday’s matchup with Edcouch-Elsa is near must-win.

Next two games: vs. Edcouch-Elsa, Jan. 24; at Hidalgo, Jan. 27.

Girls Basketball “Big Six” Rankings

1. Veterans Memorial

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 1

District Record: 11-2 (District 32-4A Standing: Second)

Last Game: Beat Juarez-Lincoln, 53-21.

Team Notes: The Lady Patriots responded well to their loss to Hidalgo by not playing patsy-cake with the Lady Huskies. Wins this week will be important as Vets is only one game ahead of Roma.

Next two games: at Mercedes, Jan. 24; vs. Valley View, Jan. 27.

2. Sharyland

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 2

District Record: 6-2 (District 30-5A Standing: T-Second with McHi)

Last Game: Beat McHi, 31-25.

Team Notes: The tough to La Joya was tough but Shary responded well by taking down McHi and securing the tiebreaker over the Lady Bulldogs. Tonight’s game with the Lady Warriors is an opportunity to move into a tie with Rowe.

Next two games: vs. Nikki Rowe, Jan. 24; at Donna, Jan. 27.

3. La Joya

Monday’s “Big Six” ranking: 3

District Record: 4-3 (District 30-5A Standing: Fourth)

Last Game: Lost to Nikki Rowe, 57-52.

Team Notes: The Lady Coyotes did not get to sweep the district top two teams, but they are proving to be a force to be reckoned with. However, what the Coyotes can’t do now is fall to teams like Donna. Mission is still right on their heels, just one game behind.

Next two games: vs. Nikki Rowe, Jan. 20; vs. Donna, Jan. 24.
