Monday’s “Big Six” Boys and Girls Basketball Rankings

Today’s Big Six Rankings:

Boys Basketball

1. Sharyland

Friday’s Big Six ranking: 1

District Record: 8-1 (District 30-5A Standing: First)

Last Game: Beat Donna, 69-39.

Team Notes: The Rattlers’ win was expected over the Redskins but the next their next two games may not be. The Palmview Lobos are winners of five straight and could ascend to the district’s top spot if they win their next two. Sharyland took the Lobos down easily in their first matchup and they have home court advantage. This week’s games will be a huge challenge for Shary, especially Friday’s rematch with the Mustangs.

Next two games: vs. Palmview, Jan. 31; at Memorial, Feb. 3.

2. Palmview

Friday’s Big Six ranking: 2

District Record: 6-2 (District 30-5A Standing: T-Second)

Last Game: Beat La Joya, 68-52.

Team Notes: Winners of five straight, the Lobos’ schedule has reverted back to when it lost two straight as Andy Saenz’s squad takes on Sharyland and Nikki Rowe. Palmview was sloppy overall in its rivalry win on Friday and will need to sharpen its passes and shots if they want to upset Shary and the Warriors.

Next two games: at Sharyland, Jan. 31; vs. Nikki Rowe, Feb. 3.

3. Juarez-Lincoln

Friday’s Big Six ranking: 3

District Record: 7-6 (District 32-4A Standing: T-Fourth with Weslaco East)

Last Game: Lost to Hidalgo, 66-44.

Team Notes: The Huskies are playing with fire in their quest for a playoff spot. A win against the Chargers would go along way but the away game will be anything but easy.

Next two games: at Brownsville Veterans, Jan. 31; vs. Mercedes, Feb. 3.

Girls Basketball

1. Veterans Memorial

Friday’s Big Six ranking: 1

District Record: 13-2 (District 32-4A Standing: Second)

Last Game: Beat Valley View, 64-32.

Team Notes: Tonight’s game with the Lady Gladiators will not be easy. However, since Roma lost Friday night, an upset tonight will not drop Vets in the standings as they are currently two games in front.

Next two games: at Roma, Jan. 31; vs. Rio Grande City, Feb. 3.

2. Sharyland

Friday’s Big Six ranking: 2

District Record: 8-3 (District 30-5A Standing: T-Second)

Last Game: Beat Donna, 60-45.

Team Notes: Shary’s chances of repeating as district champs is slim. However, considering their schedule, there is no reason they should lose their final three games.

Next two games: vs. Palmview, Jan. 31; at Memorial, Feb. 3.

3. La Joya

Friday’s Big Six ranking: 3

District Record: 7-4 (District 30-5A Standing: Fourth)

Last Game: Beat Palmview, 63-53.

Team Notes: The Lady Coyotes were played surprisingly close by their rival Palmview last Friday night. However, if La Joya wins its next two they will clinch their first postseason bid under head coach Dan Morales.

Next two games:  vs. Memorial, Jan. 31; at Mission, Feb. 3.
