Today’s Big Six Rankings:
Boys Basketball
1. Sharyland
Friday’s Big Six ranking: 1
District Record: 10-1 (District 30-5A Standing: First)
Last Game: Beat Memorial, 54-52.
Team Notes: The Rattlers are getting closer and closer to taking home the district championship. Most impressively is their ability to win the close ones.
Next two games: vs. Mission, Feb. 7; at La Joya, Feb. 10.
2. Palmview
Friday’s Big Six ranking: 2
District Record: 7-4 (District 30-5A Standing: T-Third)
Last Game: Lost to Nikki Rowe, 70-56.
Team Notes: Once winners of five straight, the Lobos have now lost two straight. If the Lobos can garner a road win over McHi tomorrow, Palmview will secure itself a postseason appearance.
Next two games: at McHi, Feb. 7; vs. Memorial, Feb. 10.
3. Juarez-Lincoln
Friday’s Big Six ranking: 3
District Record: 8-7 (District 32-4A Standing: Fifth)
Last Game: Beat Mercedes, 54-50.
Team Notes: An uphill battle awaits the Huskies in their final three games. Tonight’s game versus Valley View shouldn’t be too tough but Friday’s game with Roma is a must-win. On top of that, Juarez has to hope that Weslaco East loses at least once.
Next two games: at Valley View, Feb. 7; vs. Roma, Feb. 10.
Girls Basketball
1. Veterans Memorial
Friday’s Big Six ranking: 1
District Record: 15-2 (District 32-4A Standing: Second)
Last Game: Beat Rio Grande City, 50-11.
Team Notes: No matter what happens tonight the Lady Patriots will be the district’s second seed. Their likely opponent will be Corpus Christi Moody.
Next two games: at Weslaco East, Feb. 7; vs. bi-district opponent, TBA.
2. Sharyland
Friday’s Big Six ranking: 2
District Record: 10-3 (District 30-5A Standing: Second)
Last Game: Beat Memorial, 55-26.
Team Notes: In order to secure the second seed for District 30-5A, Shary must beat Mission tonight. It will be a battle of wills as the Lady Eagles are fighting for a playoff spot and have to win.
Next two games: vs. Mission, Feb. 7; vs. Laredo Nixon, TBA
3. Mission
Friday’s Big Six ranking: not ranked
District Record: 8-5 (District 30-5A Standing: T-Fourth)
Last Game: Beat La Joya, 40-39.
Team Notes: The Lady Eagles have now won six straight. In order to advance to bi-district Mission must win tonight on the road against Sharyland and then hope for a La Joya loss against McHi. If both Mission and La Joya win than the two will have to flip a coin.
Next two games: at Sharyland, Feb. 7; vs. bi-district opponent, TBA.
