Monday’s “Big Six” Boys and Girls Rankings

Editor’s Note: The Big Six Rankings have changed. Instead of ranking the top three teams of a sport for both the boys and the girls, we will now rank the top six teams but encompassing all the sports. The rankings will be based on which team is playing the best and appears to have the best outlook for the foreseeable future. Now that the spring sports season is upon us, the rankings will be based on baseball, softball, track and field, boys and girls soccer, etc.

Today’s Big Six Rankings:

#1

School and Sport: Sharyland Boys Basketball

Overall/District Record: 25-10, 13-1.

Team Notes: The Rattlers are playing as hot as perhaps as any team in Texas. However, recent history has shown that bi-district has not been kind to Sharyland. The Pistokache boys and the strong supporting cast have a good challenge before them.

Next Up: vs. Laredo Nixon in Alice, tonight.

#2

School and Sport: Palmview Boys Wrestling

Overall/District Record: District 31 Champs

Team Notes: Though their showing at the Region IV Championships were not ideal, the Lobos should still be feeling great for their back-to-back district championships. In addition, Christian Garza will be representing the Lobos at the state tournament in Austin this weekend.

Next Up: State Tournament in Austin, Feb. 24-25.

#3

School and Sport: Juarez-Lincoln Girls Wrestling

Overall/District Record: District 31 Champs

Team Notes: Led by Mallely Aleman, Dane Sanchez and Jacqueline Mendoza, the Lady Husky wrestlers beat out Rio Grande City and La Joya for the district championship in La Grulla two weeks ago. Sanchez went on to place second at the Region IV Tournament while Aleman placed fifth.

Next Up: State Tournament in Austin, Feb. 24-25.

#4

School and Sport: Sharyland Girls Track and Field

Overall/District Record: N/A

Team Notes: The Lady Rattler runners won the McHi Invitational over the weekend, beating out Edinburg and Veterans Memorial and totaling 141 points. The athletes especially excelled in the running events as Monica Rodriguez and Valerie Rodriguez won the 100 dash and the 800 meters, respectively. In addition, the 400 meter relay was won by the girls.

Next Up: TBA

#5

School and Sport: Sharyland Boys Track and Field

Overall/District Record: N/A

Team Notes: Like their female counterparts, the Rattler runners took home the McHi Invitational. With a point total of 171, the team beat out PSJA Memorial and Palmview. Some of the top performers were in the field events, including discus thrower Richard Cervantes and Noel Coronado in the high jump.

Next Up: TBA

#6 Sharyland Boys Soccer

School and Sport:

Overall/District Record: 5-1

Team Notes: La Joya played the traditional district powerhouse well last Friday night but ended up losing to the defending district champs, 1-0. Sharyland’s Daniel Garcia had the game’s only goal, putting his team back atop the district standings.

Next Up: at McHi, Feb. 21.

mes:  vs. Memorial, Jan. 31; at Mission, Feb. 3.
