Larry Cavazos, catcher and outfielder for the VMHS varsity baseball team, started playing baseball at the age of 5. He saw it as something new and fun to do. Coached by his father, Cavazos was inspired by him to play better and to be successful in life. His favorite player growing up was Craig Biggio, second baseman for the Astros. Larry, himself, hopes to play professionally some day.

When he was asked about this year’s 2012 Patriots team, Larry stated, "I think that we will surpass everyone’s expectations. We did well last year and we’ll do well again. Hopefully we’ll win our first district champion ship this year. I have a really good feeling about the program this year and the years to come.”

When asked if it was hard to keep good grades in school and make time for baseball, the catcher responded with, “If you just sit down and do the work it’s not that hard.” When asked if he believed that baseball was overshadowed by the other major sports he said, “No, after all it is America’s pastime, and it is played all over the world. I think the only sport more popular than baseball is soccer.”

Paula Trevino is a student at Veterans Memorial High School and is currently enrolled in the journalism class of Ms. Araceli Chapa.
