20110201_VMHS-v-Rowe-Boys-Basketball_013It is the month of elimination, do-or-die, dead man walking etc., etc. Yes, the state playoffs are just around the corner and four teams stand a chance to move on.

Record wise, Veterans Memorial (19-11, 9-5) sits in the most comfortable position at the number three spot in 32-4A. However, that position is no first class seating. Tuesday night saw the Patriots get smashed at home by district leader Roma, 47-29. Despite the loss, the Patriots still have a one game lead over Hidalgo (17-10, 8-6). Just behind the Pirates sits Rio Grande City (13-13, 8-6), Edcouch-Elsa (8-9, 7-7) and Juarez-Lincoln (9-8, 7-7) who are sitting and waiting for teams to fall.

Thus, tonight's meeting with the RGC is a near must-win for the Patriots. A loss, combined with a near guarantee win by Hidalgo over Valley View, would create a three-way tie for the last two spots. Meanwhile, if by chance Juarez-Lincoln can pull an upset tonight over Mercedes (25-5, 11-3) they too will still be in the thick of things.

District 30-5A

In 30-5A, Sharyland and La Joya are dueling it out for the final playoff spot. Currently, the Rattlers have the edge, having beaten the Coyotes on their home court in January. However, in all likelihood the final playoff spot will come down to one week from now when the two hammer it out on the Rattlers'  court. A win will allow the Rattlers to separate themselves from La Joya for good if the team can go at least 1-1 in the next two games.

In the meantime, Sharyland has plenty to play for beyond a seeding. Tonight the squad welcomes second place Memorial. Just less than a month ago, Fred Ramos and Co. had the Mustangs on the ropes before the home team stormed back from 10 down to win in the final minute. This left Sharyland with a bitter taste and revenge will no doubt be on their mind. Following the Mustangs, Sharyland takes on Mission before the visit from La Joya and then finishing with McHi.

The Coyotes get Mission tonight, followed by McHi then Shary. The season finale is a date with  district leader Rowe. You couldn't ask for a tougher three games to end the season.
