20120410_Sharyland_Bville-Porter-Boys-Playoff-Soccer-014Following back-to-back wins this weekend at the regional semi-finals Friday and the regional finals Saturday, the Sharyland Rattlers are headed to state for the first time in school history.

In Friday’s regional semi-final versus San Antonio Northside Jay, both teams were scoreless at the end of regulation play. In the first overtime Sharyland scored first, but Jay came back to tie things up. The decision came down to a tense, back-and-forth shootout, which Sharyland won 3-2.

The victory advanced the Rattlers to Saturday’s regional finals where the Rattlers defeated Brownsville Lopez 2-1. The win was a history maker for the Rattlers who have never before made the top four at state.. Both tournaments were held this past weekend at the Brownsville Sports Park.

Sharyland senior forward-midfielder Joey Martinez scored the first goal of the match, late in the first half. Lopez tied it up on a penalty kick in the fourth quarter. But Sharyland came back to win the game when Gilberto “Tito” Alanis headed in a corner kick from teammate Jesus Olivares with approximately 9 minutes remaining.

The Rattlers advance to the state semifinals at the Georgetown ISD Athletic Complex on Thursday, April 19, where they will face Region I champion Mansfield at 4 p.m.

Sharyland is the only Rio Grande Valley soccer team to make this year’s state tournament.

The Sharyland Lady Rattlers, after capturing the semi-regional championship Friday, were eliminated during the regional championship contest Saturday in a 1-0 loss to San Antonio Churchill. After capturing the District 30-5A championship, the Lady Rattlers advanced to the regional tournament by defeating Laredo Martin 5-0, Harlingen South 1-0, and Edinburg North 4-2.
