Friday night the Sharyland Rattlers struck early and often as they routed the Eagle Pass Eagles 20-0 in 5 innings in game one of the class 5A regional quarterfinal round of the state high school baseball playoffs. Saturday the Rattlers again defeated the Eagles, 9-3, to take game two of this best-of-three series. This became the third playoff series in a row that the Rattlers have swept, remaining undefeated in the playoffs.
In game one Friday the Rattlers plated the only run they’d need to outscore Eagle Pass in the first inning when Jorge Maldonado hit a solo homerun. Not to leave anything to chance, however, Sharyland went on to score 9 runs in the third and five runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to blow out the Eagles and to set up the possibility of yet another playoff sweep.
In game two, the Rattlers’ starting pitcher Tres Barrera kept the Eagle Pass batters in check with his arm and blew the game wide open with his bat in the sixth inning when he hit a three-run homerun. This gave Sharyland a 9-2 lead that took the wind completely out of the Eagles’ sails. Sharyland right fielder Eric Gutierrez, the Rattlers’ winning pitcher on Friday, had hit a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to give his team a 5-2 lead at the time.
The Eagles did manage to tack on a futile run in the seventh inning, but in the end were outscored 29-3 by the Rattlers in the two playoff games in Laredo.
Sharyland will now face Corpus Christi Carroll in the regional semifinal round of the playoffs. The date and location of the next game will be announced later.blog comments powered by Disqus
