There was a full moon over Tom Landry Stadium Friday night as the La Joya Palmview Lobos and the Mission Eagles faced off in the Progress Times' Game of the Week. Unfortunately for Palmview fans, players and coaches, it was not the Lobos' night to howl as they fell just short of victory in what would've been Coach Manuel Flores' third win in a row over Coach Mario Pena and his Eagles.
The Eagles scored 18 of their 21 points in the first quarter thanks in part to not-so-special play by the Lobos' special teams. On the Lobos' opening possession of the game, a snap from center sailed over the punter's head and went out of the end zone for a safety. The Eagles scored on offense for the first time in the game when senior quarterback Juan Rios threw a nine yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Nick Garza. Garza found the end zone for the second time in the quarter on another pass from Rios with 48 seconds to go in the period. As time ran out in the first quarter the Eagles took an 18 – 0 lead when Mission linebacker Erick Flores tackled the Lobos' punter in the end zone for the Eagles second safety in the game.
Palmview had apparently scored their first points with 4:42 to go in the first half when Lobos' quarterback Sammy Bacilio dove into the end zone for what would've been a touchdown. However after Pena complained about the way in which Bacilio unnecessarily dove across the goal line, the refs called the play back and took the six points off the scoreboard. The Lobos offense was not to be denied however as they scored a touchdown on a pass from Bacilio to wide receiver Rolando Menchaca during that same possession.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Lobos scored on a fourth and goal play from the Eagles' 18 yard line when Bacilio found wide receiver Brandon Guerra open in the end zone and connected for six points. The extra point was no good making the score 18 – 13 Eagles with 8:10 to go in the game.
After an Eagles' turnover gave the Lobos excellent field position, Menchaca caught his second touchdown pass of the game on a 12 yard throw from Bacilio that gave Palmview their first lead of the game. A failed two point conversion attempt by Palmview made the score 19 – 18 Lobos with six minutes left on the clock.
With 3:34 left to go in the game, the Eagles took possession of the ball on their own 45 yard line hoping to score for the first time since the last play of the first quarter. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty helped Mission get the ball down to the Lobos' 32 yard line. On a fourth and three from the Lobos' 25, Eagles' kicker Aldo Sanchez kicked a 42 yard field goal that gave Mission a slim 21 – 19 lead with 3:08 left on the clock.
As the result of an incomplete pass and two quarterback sacks, Palmview failed to convert a first down on their final possession and were forced to punt the ball back to the Eagles. As Lobos' fans filed their way down the aisles on the visitors' side bleachers, the Eagles ran the final 1:36 off the clock to give their head coach his first victory over his former assistant but more importantly an opening week win. Final score: Eagles 21 Lobos 19.
