Lady Rattlers sweep Juárez-Lincoln in three games

Progress Times photo by Doug YoungMISSION – The Lady Rattlers recovered from a hard-fought loss against Edinburg Economedes over the weekend to sweep La Joya Juárez-Lincoln in three games on Tuesday at their home gymnasium.

Sharyland was led by senior outside hitter Elise Smith’s 15 kills and senior setter Sara Ramón’s 24 assists to defeat the Lady Huskies 25-6, 25-18, 25-13. The Lady Rattlers improved to 2-1 in District 30-5A with the victory over Juárez-Lincoln.

“I think right now we have to focus and we have to keep pushing from beginning to end, and not let up in the middle of the match,” Smith said. “After our loss (Economedes), which we were not expecting, we were ready to come out and work twice as hard, and we have been. We’re all aiming towards the same goal and it requires hard work to get there.”

Smith has been working hard to help her team improve. In the past two matches, she has racked up 34 kills, 32 digs, two blocks, and one ace.

“It was tough, I just asked the girls to refocus and they came out strong today,” said Sharyland first-year head coach Laura Cavazos. “I felt they did a better job today in transition. We really worked on defense, it’s something we need to work on but we did a good job today.

After the Lady Rattlers cruised through the first game with a 25-6 win, Juárez-Lincoln made Sharyland sweat it out in the second. Despite going up 17-7, the Lady Huskies cut the Sharyland lead to 23-18 before the home team sealed a 25-18 victory on Smith’s game-point kill.

“Elise is one of our go-to players,” Cavazos said. “She’s been stepping up and is developing into a real good player. She has a lot more shot selection now and we need her to be our go-to player, so I’m glad she had a good game.”

Senior outside hitter Kiki Honrubia contributed six kills, four digs, and one ace, while junior setter Kimberly Cross had nine assists, three digs, and four aces in the Sharyland victory.

The Lady Rattlers will host Edinburg on Sept. 8 at 1 p.m. and Donna on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in a pair of tough district matches.

“Those are tough opponents, the type of opponents where we need to make sure we’re on our A game,” Cavazos said. “We can’t get loose. We’re going to be playing Economedes soon, and Edinburg North, which are probably some of the toughest teams in our district. We need to stay disciplined, play great defense, and improve every game. That’s one of the things I keep pushing. Not worry too much about our opponents, but about ourselves and cutting out errors.”
