Lady Eagles’ Gallegos and Rodriguez to be honored

20130524 Vaness-RodriguezA Mission High School student athlete and her coach have been selected for honors by the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA). Outstanding girls track athlete Vanessa Rodriguez has been selected as a TGCA All Star. Her coach, Irene Gallegos, has been selected to be the TGCA Track and Field All Stars coach for conferences 4A and 5A.

Each year at the UIL State Track and Field Meet the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) Track Committee selects 15 girls from conferences 1A, 2A and 3A and 15 from conferences 4A and 5A as TGCA Track and Field All Stars. Selections are made from nominations submitted by member coaches with only high school seniors being eligible to be selected.

Rodriguez, who won the long jump and the 200m dash district championships this year and also placed second in the triple jump, is one of only two Valley girls to be selected as a TGCA All Star. She also placed second in the long jump, fourth in the triple jump and first in the 200m dash at the area meet, which made her a three event regional qualifier. She will be attending the TGCA Summer Clinic in Austin.

Lady Eagles’ head track coach Gallegos was happy about being selected for this honor.

“I was selected by my TGCA Track Committee peers to be the TGCA Track All Star Coach at the summer clinic,” explained Gallegos. “As such I was able to nominate a track assistant to help me and that will be Coach Sandra Guerrero from Sharyland.

“I am very excited about this because it gives us an opportunity to have athletes and coaches from down here in the Valley, and not just from other parts of the state, recognized,” said Gallegos.

The 30 girls selected as all stars will be part of the three-day-long program aimed at helping anybody that teaches girls’ sports become better coaches.

20130524 Irene-Gallegos“Being that it’s a clinic, the all stars will participate in demo sessions that coaches such as myself will put on,” explained Gallegos. “Each coach will have a certain demo to do. My session will be on warming up, grass drills and things like that. And I will use a couple of girls, especially Vanessa, as part of my demo.”

“I will be representing 4A and Sandra Guerrero will be representing 5A,” added Gallegos. “She will be my assistant during my demo, but as part of the staff she will also be putting on a demo of her own to the clinic.”

The track and cross country all star girls and coaches will be recognized and honored at the awards presentation ceremony during the half-time of the All Stars basketball game on Friday, July 12, at 11 a.m. at the Burger Activity Center in Austin.
