Sharyland, Veterans Memorial advance in softball playoffs

20140425 Softball CCRay vs VMHS lg-01For the majority of high school baseball and softball teams across the state, the season is over. For two Big 6 softball and three baseball teams, the best is yet to come.

Having started their playoffs a week earlier than their baseball counterparts, the Veterans Memorial Lady Patriots and the Sharyland High Lady Rattlers softball teams are both preparing for their Area Round matchups this weekend. Coach Vivian Ray’s Lady Patriots made school history last week as they won a bi-district championship for the first time and advanced by winning a one-game playoff against Corpus Christi Ray, 8-3.

Sharyland’s Lady Rattlers also advanced, but they did it the hard way. After losing the opening game of a best-of-three series against the Laredo United Lady Longhorns, Sharyland was forced to win both games at home Saturday or see their season come to an abrupt end. Much to the delight of the home faithful at the Sharyland High Softball Field, the Lady Rattlers came through as they won Game No. 2 in the series, 9-5 and Game No. 3 in extra innings, 9-8.

The Lady Patriots will be taking on the Medina Valley Lady Panthers in a best-of-three series that begins tonight. With both coaches having opted for a neutral site, this series will be played in Sinton. Game 1 is scheduled to be played tonight at 7, game 2 is scheduled to be played tomorrow (Saturday) at 4 p.m. and game No. 3 (if necessary) is scheduled to be played 30 minutes after the completion of game 2.

Lady Patriots head coach Vivian Ray shared a few thoughts about what it will take for her hitters to be successful against Medina Valley’s No. 1 starter.

“It’s going to take a lot of patience and a lot more discipline at the plate for us to make contact with the young lady that’s going to be pitching. If we start chasing what she wants us to swing at, then we’re going to look foolish. From what I’ve heard though we stack up pretty well against them.”

The Lady Rattlers will be playing much closer to home this weekend when they take on the San Benito Lady Greyhounds. Game 1 of the best-of-three series will be on their home field tonight at 6 p.m. Games 2 and 3 (if necessary) will be played in San Benito at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. tomorrow.
