Eric Gutierrez named District MVP
Dispite a disappointing bi-district loss to Laredo United, the Sharyland Rattlers baseball team had an outstanding season – 13-0 in district play – supported by a top-notch lineup of players. The recently released all-district list proves the point, as the Rattlers led the district with the most selections: eleven placements on the first and second teams.
Pitcher and utility player Eric Gutierrez, along with his coach Bart Bickerton, led the team in award hardware. Gutierrez was named District 30-5A MVP and Bickerton was honored as the Coach of the Year for helping the Rattlers obtain a 28-2 overall record and a 13-0 district record. Gutierrez’s strong hitting percentage of .566 went along with 58 RBIs helped him earn the top honor.
Six other Sharyland ball players joined their coach and star player on the all-district list. Second baseman Francisco Martinez, third baseman Brian Valencia, catcher Erik Garcia, outfielders Oscar Gonzalez and Fernie Martinez and designated hitter Erasmo Valdez all made the first team. Martinez also made the second team as a pitcher.
One other ball player, Tres Barrera, made the second team for the Rattlers twice; once for his play at shortstop and again for his pitching.
La Joya had three players make the first and second teams. Edgar Flores made the first team for his pitching and then the second team for his play at first base. Gabriel Barrera, in addition to making the second team as a pitcher, obtained first team honors for his general all around play. Finally, Noel Munoz made the first team as an outfielder.
Palmview placed two players on the lists, one on each team. The first team selection was pitcher Jose Marquez. The second team selection was Ricardo Lopez in the outfield. Mission’s Alex Quintero was the Eagles’ lone representative, making the second team for his play at third base.
In 32-4A, Veterans Memorial and Juarez-Lincoln had some of their fine players make the first and second teams. In fact, Vets’ Brandon Ibarra and Juarez’s Carlos Menchaca were named the district’s Newcomers of the Year.
The Patriots had six other representatives, three on each team. First teamers were second baseman Desi Villarreal, outfielder Isaac Guerrero and designated hitter Adrian Morales. Villarreal was also named to the second team as a pitcher. Julian Fernandez made it twice to the second team. First as a pitcher and also as the third baseman.
Juarez-Lincoln had two others make the lists, one on each team. Israel Elizondo was a first team selection for his play in the outfield while Eleazar Salinas was the second team selection at first base.blog comments powered by Disqus
