20110826_LEG_7090fIt didn’t take long Friday evening for coach Manuel Flores’ Palmview Lobos to make it known that they were not interested in making the Rio Grande City Rattlers  head football coach Carlos Longoria’s debut  a pleasant one.  On the first play from scrimmage Lobos’ running back Angel Gonzalez took the ball and ran it 31 yards to the Rattlers’ 38 yard line.  On the very next play Lobos’ quarterback, Abel Martinez called his own number and ran 38 yards down the field for the first touchdown of the Lobos’ 2011 season.  Unfortunately for the Rattlers, that was just a preview of what was to come as the Lobos went on to hand the Rattlers their first loss of the season and the first loss of coach Longoria’s tenure, 41-0.

Early in the second quarter, Lobos’ quarterback Abel Martinez scored his second touchdown of the game on a 13 yard run making the score 14-0. Later in the same quarter, a 72 yard Lobos’ drive was capped off by quarterback Abel Martinez’ third touchdown as he ran it in from the 1 yard line, making the score 21-0.  With just over a minute left in the second quarter, quarterback Abel Martinez got his Lobos into scoring position by running the ball 41 yards to the Rattlers’ 21 yard line. The Lobos offense then took advantage of this field position when running back Angel Gonzalez scored his first touchdown of the season making the score 28-0 Lobos going into the intermission.

In the third quarter, Palmview quarterback Erasmo Gonzalez led his team down to the Rattlers’ 20 yard line where placekicker Alex Segura kicked a 37 yard field goal making the score 31-0 Lobos.   With 3:48 left in the third quarter, Lobos’ running back Angel Gonzalez ran down the right side of the field and scored his second touchdown of the game making the score 38-0 Palmview.

With the final outcome all but decided, both teams exchanged possessions in the fourth quarter until Lobos’ placekicker Alex Segura kicked an 18 yard field goal with 7:29 left in the game to seal the victory for Palmview.

In what was nothing short of an impressive victory for Palmview, Coach Manuel Flores seems to have his Lobos firing on all cylinders already this season.  How his team will fare against District 30-5A rivals however is yet to be seen, but judging by how they dominated against the Rattlers, the Lobos could very well find themselves howling all the way to the playoffs this season.
