OBIT-Dina Fernandez Treviño

Dina Fernandez Treviño, 97, of Mission, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2013 at Mission Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Treviño was born in Brownsville on Oct. 18, 1916, and lived most of her life in Mission. She was married to Samuel Treviño Jr.

During WWII, she helped her husband at his business, Cash Feed & Seed. In 1950, Mrs. Treviño opened the BenSam Shop which remained in business for 44. She later added Dina’s Kiddie Shop.

For many years, she participated in the Texas Citrus Fiesta style shows by making costumes where she received numerous awards. She received numerous awards throughout her lifetime: Woman of the Year 1984, Outstanding Community Service Award, C. B. Curtis Award in 1986, Texas Citrus Fiesta Maureen Duncan Nickolaus Award, The Golden Citrus Award, The Good Neighbor of the Year Award (twice), Shining Star Award, and the Pioneer Award.

Mrs. Treviño served on the Mission Chamber Commerce board and was the international director of the International Good Neighbor Council. She was elected twice as president of the Zonta International Club of West Hidalgo. She was head of the Miss Pageant Committee in Mission, was a member of the local AARP chapterARP and was active for 10 years with the Mission Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her children, Samuel J. Treviño III of McAllen, Jose Fernandez Treviño of Mission, Dina Linda Rodriguez of Spring Branch and David Aaron Treviño of McAllen; and 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A funeral service was held on Dec. 28 at the First Presbyterian Church in Mission. Interment followed at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission.
