OBIT-Peter Lloyd Balkan

MISSION – Peter Lloyd Balkan, 86, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 in Mission.

Mr. Balkan was born on Oct. 24, 1927, married Sylvia Locken on Aug. 26, 1950 and then Lilli Anderson in May of 2004. He was a civil engineer for the U.S Soil Conservation Service and retired in 1976 to Lake Maud, Minn., moved to South Padre Island and later settled in Mission.

Prior to his retirement, he was a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a church leader at First Lutheran Church in Mandan, N.D. and Trinity Lutheran in Mission.

Survivors include his wife, Lilli; children; Lore Cunningham from Shady Spring, WV, Shelley Grant from Kasson, Minn., Petrice Balkan from Lake Maud, Minn. and Kristen Bringgold from Lakeville, Minn; stepchildren, Richard Anderson from Detroit Lakes, Minn. and Tula Smajstrla from Fredericksburg; sister, Joanne Kramer from Wheaton, Minn.; and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia; a sister, Mary Siegert; and a great-grandson, Beau Swift.
