Fourteen local wrestlers among state’s best

20140207 Wrestling PrismaHernandezThe best of the best high school wrestlers from across the state of Texas will be competing at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Wrestling Meet in Garland, Texas next week. Among them will be 14 local boys and girls. All of whom earned the right to take to the mats against the state’s elite by finishing amongst the top four in each of their respective weight classes at the UIL Region IV 4A and 5A wrestling meets last week.

While each of the Big 6 schools qualified at least one wrestler for the state meet, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln tops the list in total number of state qualifiers with four and in number of regional champions with two. In addition, two Huskies boys will be making the trip to the Dallas area as alternates as a result of their fifth place finishes at the regional meet.

The two Juarez-Lincoln regional champions are Leslie Oliva (95 lbs.) and Danae Sanchez (148 lbs.). Mayra Becerra will be joining her Lady Huskies teammates in Garland as a result of her third place finish in the 110-lb. weight class. This will be Sanchez’s second trip to the state meet as she earned the silver medal last year.

Lincoln’s Vicente Garcia will be competing at the state meet in his 285-lb. weight class as a result of his fourth place finish last week. Andres Gonzales (152 lbs.) and Edgar Delgado (220 lbs.) are the two Huskies that will be making the trip to Garland next week as alternates in hopes of moving up into the top four should another wrestler be scratched from the competition.

Other state qualifiers from last week’s UIL Region IV 5A meet are Sharyland High School’s Shane Foley (second place, 152 lbs.), and Palmview High School’s Alyssa Salinas (second place, 95 lbs.) and Prisma Hernandez (fourth place, 102 lbs.). La Joya High School’s Maria Rios also earned a trip to state by placing second in the 138-lb division, while teammate Daisy Ramirez was crowned regional champion in the 165-lb. class.)

Three Veterans Memorial High School lady wrestlers emerged from the UIL Region IV 4A meet as state qualifiers: Joaida Tornes (third place, 95 lbs.), Klarissa Blanco (second place, 185 lbs.), and Jaqueline Gonzalez (regional champion, 165 lbs.). Gonzalez was last year’s state silver medal winner in the 165 lb. weight class.

Two Mission High wrestlers will be among the state’s best in Garland next week. They are Sabas Garcia, fourth place in the 170-lb. weight class, and Lady Eagle Vaneliy Guerrero, fifth place in the 215-lb. weight class. Guerrero earned the right to compete at the state meet as the result of a wrestle-back victory over the fourth place finisher. Garcia is the first boy in Mission High School history to qualify for the state wrestling meet.
