OBIT-Calvin N. Snyder

MISSION – Calvin N. Snyder, 80, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014.

Mr. Snyder was born on Nov. 28, 1933, in Brundage and grew up on a ranch between San Marcos and Wimberley. He graduated from San Marcos High School in 1951. He worked construction from 1951 until he was drafted into the Army in 1954 where he served at Fort Bliss and was honorably discharged in 1956 and immediately enrolled at Southwest Texas State University. He received his bachelor’s degree in elementary education with a concentration in speech and hearing therapy.

He married Joye Bragg in 1954. After her passing, he married Mollie Haley in 1976.

In 1960 he started work for the McAllen I.S.D. as a speech and hearing therapist. In 1963 he was promoted to coordinator of the special education department where he served until he retired in 1990. During his tenure, his department grew from eight staff members to over 250. While working, he continued his education and earned master’s degrees in counseling and administration from The University of Texas Pan-American.

He served with the Easter Seal Society, Salvation Army, Valley Botanical Gardens and the McAllen International Museum. He was a deacon at Calvary Baptist Church, McAllen; Conway Avenue Baptist, Mission; Trinity Baptist Church, McAllen; and First Baptist Church, McAllen. He served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday School director and as chairman of the deacons.

Survivors include his wife, Mollie, of Mission; sister, Dorothy March of California; son, Calvin Sterling of Roma; daughter, Juanita Vega of Mission; and seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joye; daughter, Deborah; his parents; and a sister, June Ezell Williams.

A funeral service was held on May 17 at First Baptist Church oin McAllen.
