OBIT-Eugenia P. Silva
MISSION – Eugenia P. Silva (Genie) was born November 15, 1926, in Mission, Texas to Melchor and Nicholasa Peña.
She attended Roosevelt Elementary and Mission High School. Eugenia started working as a teenage retail clerk for the late Ernesto and Evita Moreno, whose grocery store was located on Fourth and Francisco Streets. She went on to work for the H.E.B food stores in Mission and McAllen for a total of 37 years, and won countless awards for her customer service. Eugenia loved interacting with her co-workers and incalculable customers throughout her 50-plus year career and truly missed them once she retired.
Eugenia was the proud daughter of one of the early pioneer families of Mission. Her father, Melchor, was a native Texan who had the distinction of owning the first barbershop business in the community.
She was also honored to be a part of a resolute military family. Her two brothers, Jose and Jesus, served with distinction in Europe during World War II.
In retirement, Eugenia loved to travel, read, and donate her time to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She was a member of the religious organization “Las Guadalupanas.” She loved being around her grandchildren. Her biggest hobby was participating in a good bingo game.
Eugenia was preceded in death by her husband, Eusebio; her parents, Melchor and Nicholasa Peña; two brothers, Jose Hernandez and Jesus Peña; and two sisters, Felipa Ramos and Juanita Mercado.
Eugenia is survived by her loving children, Blanca Trevino (Julio) of Austin, Texas, Dave Silva (Lupe) of Los Angeles, California, Rogelio Silva (Mercedes) of Mission, Texas and Linda Gonzalez (Raul) of McAllen, Texas; a sister, Rafaela Rodriguez (Israel) of Mission, Texas; five grandchildren, Jesse, Stacey, Andy, and Markus Silva and Gregg Trevino; one great-grandchild, Gabriel Silva-Whatley; and a niece Gracie Ramos.
Eugenia was a devout Roman Catholic and prayed the Holy Rosary daily. Genie is now happily reunited with our Lord Jesus Christ and loved-ones gone before her.
The family kindly asks that, for those who desire, memorial contributions be made to “Las Guadalupanas Society” or “Our Lady of Guadalupe Building Fund” both located at 620 Dunlap Street, Mission, TX 78572.
Visitation for Eugenia Silva will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014, from 1 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 23, 2014, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Mission. Burial will follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission. Funeral services are under the direction of Ric Brown Family Funeral Home of Mission.
