Clinton Elementary wins Ronald McDonald House Charities pull tab challenge

20140530 LJISD Clinton Elem Ronald McDonald AF 8059PEÑITAS—William J. Clinton Elementary Principal Martin Muñoz said his students are focused on helping their community as well as promoting a green lifestyle.

The Green Club spearheaded a pull-tab campaign at the campus, a project sponsored through the Ronald McDonald House Charities for the Rio Grande Valley. The students, with the help of the district and their community, managed to raise nearly a ton of can pull-tabs.

The campaign enlists the help of elementary schools from all over the Valley to collect pull-tabs from cans that will be recycled for donations. Families who stay in the Ronald McDonald House are asked for a $10 donation fee, but when payment can’t be made, the proceeds from the pull tabs are used to house the families.

Students are able to help local parents with children in the hospital and upon winning they earn a magic show from Ronald McDonald. The campus also received the Traveling Trophy to display throughout the year.

On the last day of school, Clinton Elementary students were able to watch Ronald McDonald crack jokes, play games and have a chance at winning gifts raffled by the McDonald’s mascot.

Aaron Lumbreras, science teacher, said this year the entire district worked together on the project.
