MISSION – Maria Guadalupe Ramirez, 61, passed away on Monday, July 28, 2014 at her home in Mission after battling cancer.

She was born Nov. 27, 1952, in Roma, to Francisco and Margarita Treviño. After graduating from Incarnate Word University with degrees in Spanish and biology, she taught at Roma High School, McAllen High School and then went on to the Sharyland school district. After earning her master’s degrees in Spanish and counseling, she became the head counselor at Sharyland High School until her retirement..

Survivors include her husband of 35 years, Andrew Ramirez Jr.; children, Andrew Ramirez III of Houston and Christina Ramirez of Los Angeles, Calif.; siblings, Francisco Treviño, Cayetano Treviño, Elva Hinojosa, Alicia Morton, Maggie La Grande and Gloria Cantu; and a granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Ramirez; her parents; and a brother, Hector Treviño.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 31, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in McAllen. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.  Arrangements are under the direction of Virgil Wilson Mortuary in Mission.
