Lobos score big again
The Palmview Lobos improved their record to 2 – 0 Thursday evening with their 50 – 26 rout of the PSJA SW Javelinas. For the second week in a row the Lobos surpassed the 50 point mark as they opened their non-district schedule last week with a 53 – 7 win over Brownsville Lopez.
Palmview jumped out to a 7 – 0 lead on their first possession when running back Joel Pina capped off a long drive by carrying the ball into the end zone from nine yards out. Palmview tacked on their second touchdown of the first quarter on their second possession of the game when left guard and occasional fullback Arturo Gutierrez powered his way into the end zone from two yards out.
At the intermission Palmview led 21 – 7, then increased their lead to 42 – 14 by the end of the third quarter before closing out their scoring with a final touchdown and a two-point conversion in the fourth quarter.
Pina, who led the Lobos’ offensive attack by scoring four touchdowns for the second week in a row, shared how it feels to be 2 – 0 on the season when he said, “We have to stay humble and we have to stay focused. We can’t let the fact that we’re 2 – 0 go to our heads. We just have to keep working hard in practice and that’s it.”
As for Gutierrez, his first quarter touchdown was his second in as many weeks. The fact that he is for the most part an offensive lineman but he now gets to carry the ball is something he is enjoying.
“I am a left guard but sometimes they put me in at fullback,” shared Gutierrez. “It’s a new position that they’ve put me in and I’m trying to fill it as best I can. I enjoy running with the ball and scoring touchdowns.”
The Lobos, who qualified for the playoffs last year for the first time in school history, will be looking to go 3 – 0 next Friday as they play their first home game of the season against the Rio Grande City Rattlers. Rio Grande defeated the Lobos in Week No. 3 last year by a score of 14 – 9.
