MISSION – Maria Ella Garza, 90, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016.
Mrs. Garza was born in West Texas and lived in Alpine. At the age of 19 she worked at the Marfa Air Base during WWII as a mechanic’s assistant when she met and married her husband, Reymundo Garza, in Alpine in July, 1944, and moved to the Rio Grande Valley.
She was a homemaker and later went to work for the Mission Consolidated Independent School District as a teacher’s aide. After receiving her GED, she enrolled at Pan American University and earned her bachelor’s degree and went on to A&I in Kingsville to receive her master’s. She spent the next 22 years working in education.
A member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, she was active in Damas Catolicas and participated in a prayer group for 25 years that visited the elderly and sick at Mission Nursing Home. She and her husband were Eucharist ministers for St Paul’s since its inception.
Survivors include her children, Anna Ward, George W. Garza, Rebecca Cochran, Richard Garza and Ray Garza; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Reymundo Garza; siblings, Ismael Moreno, Willie Moreno and Fay Moreno Urquidez; parents, Nicholas Moreno and Anita Pallanez Moreno; and daughter, Gloria Garza Plummer.
A funeral service was held on March 21 at St. Paul’s. Burial followed at Laurel Hill Cemetery in Mission.
