Laura Avendaño was sworn into Place 4 on the La Joya ISD Board of Trustees at the July 7 school board meeting. She will serve as interim in the same seat that her husband Jesus (Chuy) Avendaño sat in before he died of a massive heart attack in late March.
While holding up one of her late husband’s shoes, Laura Avendaño made a promise to those in the board room that she will do her best to metaphorically fill Chuy Avendaño’s shoes.
In June, the city of Peñitas passed a resolution supporting Avendaño’s appointment to the board. Chuy Avendaño was a Peñitas native.
Laura Avendaño told the Progress Times that she was approached by members of the community and was encouraged to seek the position so that she could complete Chuy Avendaño’s term. Peñitas Mayor Rigo Lopez said he wanted her to be the voice for the city.
“This was something that our community and our city wanted,” Lopez said. “There’s nobody more deserving than another Avendaño. They have served our community well.”
The LJISD board also had the option to keep the seat vacant until the next election, which is in November. The now interim board member said she plans to run for the position in November as well.
“It takes time away from work, away from family, but he did it with passion. So I’m going to do that,” the chaplain said. “I am going to follow his legacy.”
