OBIT – Matias Farias
MISSION – Pastor Matias Farias, 89, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at his home in Mission.
Pastor Farias was born in Seguin on Feb. 5, 1927, to Juan A. and Angelita Farias. He was a master carpenter, educator and pastor. He was a WWII veteran serving in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves, attaining the rank of master sergeant and retired from the Army in 1987. He received the Army of Occupational Medal and Meritorious Medal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, Dyna B. Farias; children, Elizabeth Guevara, Evelyn Ybarra and Matias Farias Jr.; stepchildren, Dina Sanchez, Denisa Veliz, Dora Sanchez and Jesus Sanchez; siblings, Fernando Farias, Reynaldo Farias, Isauro Farias, Juan Farias, Juvencio Farias and Luciana Farias; and eight grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Maria Vallejo Farias; parents; daughter, Angelita Garcia; and siblings, Jose Maria Farias, Margarita Farias Taguilas, Guadalupe Farias, Rosa Farias and Jose Farias.
A funeral service was held on Feb. 6 at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. Burial followed at Rio Grande Valley State Cemetery in Mission.
