MISSION – John Joseph “Joe” Mathis Jr., 91, of Mission, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.
Mr. Mathis was born on Jan. 25, 1926, in Harmony, Ind., to John Mathis Sr. and Nellie (Cunningham) Mathis. He served in the United States Navy during World War II manning torpedoes in the Pacific from 1943 to the end of the occupation in Japan.
He married Marilyn Marie (Albright) Mathis on June 9, 1947, and they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. He survived her by two weeks, she having passed away on September 22, 2017. They wintered in Texas and became residents in 2001.
He attended Heating and Air Conditioning School in Chicago and worked for Curtiss Candy Company, then Palmer’s Tavern as a bartender, at Home Packing Company in Terre Haute, Ind. as a route man and, in punch card production at the IBM Greencastle facility and ended his career with IBM as a graphic designer until his retirement.
Survivors include his children, Dr. John Joseph Mathis III of Vincennes, Ind., and Dr. Connie Mathis Patchett of Katy; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
Burial will be held on Friday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
