Mary Eileen Compton
April 26, 1921 – January 12, 2019
Mary Compton passed away on January 12, 2019, in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 97. Mary was known for her kindness, positive energy, and faith. Her smile would light up a room!
Mary was born in Douglas, Wyoming, on April 26, 1921, after her mother traveled in a covered wagon into town! In 1943 she met John Compton and spent 71 happy years together, had five children, nine grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.
After 30 years of military life, Mary and John settled in Mission, Texas. She enjoyed volunteer work with St. Paul’s Catholic Church, P.E.O. Chapter EY, Baccalaureate, Study Club, and Garden Club. She was awarded the Maurine Duncan Award. She was also honored as First Lady of Mission.
Mary loved her family, friends, and home. She was loved by all who knew her. Her grandchildren would say she’s the best grandma in the world, with wonderful summers at “Camp Grandma.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. John T. Compton.
Survivors include sons, J.R. Compton (Anna), Thomas Compton (Patsy), John Compton (Julie), Dale Compton (Clare), Mary Ann Mathis (Todd); grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, Audra, Olivia, Joyce, Sean, Nathan, Haley, Jackson; and great-grandchildren, Sarah Anne, Chloe, Chaz, Maya, Blaze, Kyle, Cooper, Spencer, Maizy, Roman, and Charlotte.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas. A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 28, 2019, at 10 a.m. at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
