Record 159 UTRGV student athletes make fall athletic director’s honor roll
EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Wednesday that a record 159 student-athletes made the Fall Athletic Director’s Honor Roll by achieving a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 while serving as full-time students as part of a team during the fall semester.
UTRGV Athletics will recognize these student-athletes at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Chicago State on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The men’s basketball student-athletes will be recognized prior to the game.
Thirty-three student-athletes earned perfect GPAs of 4.0. As a whole, the department’s fall GPA, encompassing 260 student-athletes, was 3.16, an increase from 3.08 last fall.
Women’s track & field had the most student-athletes named to the AD Honor Roll with 29, while women’s tennis had the highest percentage as 88.89 percent of their student-athletes earned the honor.
Women’s tennis had a department-best 3.61 GPA. Men’s tennis had the highest GPA among men’s teams at 3.39.
“Our student-athletes are continuing to excel by putting in a lot of hard work both in the classroom and in study hall,” UTRGV Director of Athletics Chris King said. “Their grade point averages are higher than that of the rest of the undergraduate student body. We’re proud of the job our student-athletes are doing.”
