As part of our new monthly series, we will be highlighting a local small business as a token of appreciation for advertising with us.
As the owner of Mission’s TLC Pharmacy and Medical Equipment, one thing is important for Alberto Vela: good customer service.
It’s why when he first opened his business, he introduced himself by knocking on resident’s doors to let people know of his pharmacy, which has two locations on 2120 E. Griffin Parkway and on 1242 E. Bus. 83, Suite 7.
“You want them to get to know you so they can be comfortable with,” Vela said. “When you work in pharmacy, people expect good service and if they’re happy with us, then they come back. We’re all about making it a welcoming environment for them.”
Vela’s outlook on his business must be working as when it first opened in 2006, he was filling out 15 prescriptions. Between its two locations, TLC Pharmacy now fills out 500 prescriptions.
Before opening at TLC Pharmacy, Vela worked at the now defunct Medical Shop and Medikap pharmacies in McAllen.
His jobs there, as well as attending pharmacy school, helped him better understand how to serve customers.
“It’s all about doing what is needed for your customers,” Vela said. “If you can’t pay for a prescription, for example, that’s ok. We work with you to make sure you leave the pharmacy with your much needed medication. We understand how important medicine is, we don’t want to deny you of that.”
As part of his welcoming environment, both TLC locations serve coffee and pan dulce from the Santa Fe Tortilla Factory in Palmview so his customers can relax as they wait for their prescriptions to be filled.
Both TLC Pharmacy locations boast a guaranteed 10-minute long wait time for prescription orders, a must Vela said to serve his customer’s busy schedules. They also accept all forms of insurance and sell medical supplies, ranging from diabetic shoes to diapers.
TLC also delivers medical supplies to customers with a guaranteed same day shipping so that his customers can receive the supplies by the end of the day that they ordered them.
“It’s a big help to my customers if they feel like they are being welcomed, and these services are doing that for them,” Vela said.
