UTRGV pitching shuts down Houston Baptist

EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team beat Houston Baptist University (HBU) 6-0 on Tuesday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.

Senior Jerred Quartier started for UTRGV (2-2) and didn’t allow a hit until the fourth. He finished with three strikeouts in four innings.

Senior McAllen Memorial alum Juan Carreon II followed by retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced.

Sophomore Max Balderrama Jr. finished up with a clean ninth.

UTRGV hit around against HBU (2-2) starter Daniel Endsley (0-1) in the first, scoring on singles by juniors Christian Sepulveda and Nick Contreras. Then, with the bases loaded and two outs, freshman Vela alum Aaron Galvan was plunked to force-in a run.

UTRGV scored two runs in the third on RBI-doubles by freshman Jacob Flores and junior Andy Atwood.

UTRGV added one more run in the eighth on a Galvan single.

Four UTRGV hitters had two hits, including Flores, Atwood, Galvan and junior Conrado Diaz, who also drew a walk.

UTRGV opens up the Al Ogletree Classic on Friday at 7 p.m. against Portland at UTRGV Baseball Stadium. This game features the Raising Cane’s Challenge.
