EDINBURG – Sophomore Jacob Hirsh capped a three-run ninth with a walk-off single to lead The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team to its seventh-straight win and a four-game sweep of the University of Rhode Island (URI) with a 7-6 win on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
This is UTRGV’s (9-3) longest winning streak since Feb. 17-26, 2017, when the team won eight in a row.
UTRGV trailed 7-4 when junior Elijah Alexander led off with a walk against Cam LaFleur (0-2). Senior Andy Atwood followed with a single. Senior Anthony Gomez came up showing bunt, but the first two pitches were balls, including a passed ball that put the runners in scoring position. Gomez tied the game with a triple to right field. One batter later, Hirsh singled to center to end the game.
Atwood finished 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Gomez went 2-for-4 with a walk as well.
That made a winner of junior Ricky Arevalo (1-0), who recorded the final two outs.
Junior Nick Hollas started and pitched a career-high 6.1 innings, striking out four while scattering six hits and two walks.
URI (2-9) scored with one out in the second on an Austin White single. Hollas didn’t allow another hit until the seventh, retiring 14 of the next 15 hitters he faced.
UTRGV tied the game in the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman Vela alum Aaron Galvan, and then took the lead in the fourth on a wild pitch that scored junior Christian Sepulveda.
Then, with Atwood at second and two outs in the fifth, Hirsh hit an RBI-single, stole second, and scored on a double by junior Conrado Diaz.
URI came back to tie the game at 4 in the seventh on two bases loaded walks and a Xavier Vargas groundout.
URI took the lead in the ninth on a Kevin Heiss sacrifice fly and a Laurence Hill single.
UTRGV plays its first road game of the season on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at No. 18 Texas in a game that will be televised on Longhorn Network.
