Driver in deadly chase still on the run

The Texas Department of Public Safety is still searching for the driver responsible for a deadly crash yesterday that killed two San Juan residents and injured others.

A State Trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a 2004 Ford Expedition for a traffic violation on U.S. 83 west of FM 2221 near La Joya Wednesday morning when the driver refused to stop according to a news release from DPS.

police lineThe driver was traveling eastbound on US 83 from Sullivan City when he veered onto the median and collided with a Nissan Sentra travelling on the opposite end of the road.

The two people in the Nissan Sentra, Leonel Martinez Jr., 45 and Aurora Chavez, 69, died at the scene. The Ford Expedition rolled over and ejected various passengers who were transported to various local hospitals according to the news release. Their identities have not yet been released.

The driver of the Ford Expedition fled the scene on foot and DPS, along with various law enforcement agencies, are still searching for him.
