UPDATE: Friday, June 21, 2019 at 8: 00 a.m.
A Mission police officer died following an officer involved shooting Thursday evening.
An unidentified Mission police officer was taken to McAllen Medical Center in critical condition following a shooting near Stewart Road and Business 83 in Mission earlier today.
City Attorney Gus Martinez confirmed the officer passed away as a result of the shooting.
The Texas Department of Public Safety announced in a tweet they will handle the investigation.
Mission police Investigator Art Flores confirmed Friday morning that the unidentified suspect was killed at the scene and not taken into custody as previously reported.
A press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. at Mission City Hall will include more information about the shooting.
The city of Mission addressed the shooting in a social media post across their platforms last night.
“We are beyond devastated. It is with the deepest sadness we share with you that we lost one of our own. Our officer was shot when he was waved down for a suspect with a weapon. He gave his life protecting us,” the post said. “There are no words to explain how heartbroken we are as a community. Please take a moment to pray for his family and all our law officers during this senseless tragedy.”
