Events Calendar – Week of March 6, 2020

March 7 – The 5K Sweet Run & Fun Walk, supporting the South Texas Juvenile Diabetes Association, will be held at Mayor Pablo Peña Park, 300 N. Airport Dr., Weslaco. Check-in is at 7:30 a.m. with an 8 a.m. start for the 5K and 8:30 a.m. start for the Fun Walk. Entry fees are $25 for the 5K, $20 per runner in teams of three or more, and $5 for the one-mile Fun Walk.  The Fun Walk is free for children with diabetes and ages 10 and under.  Awards will be given to the largest team, best T-shirt design and most spirited team.  Register at stjda.org.

March 7 – Learn new strategies, resources, and techniques to sharpen family history skills at the 2020 RGV Genealogy & Local History Symposium presented by the McAllen Public Library and the Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Genealogical Society. Attend hands-on workshops and learn from leading speakers in their field from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the McAllen Main Library.

March 7 – Persons of all ages can join with University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine students for the monthly Walk with a Future Doc (WWAFD). It begins at 9 a.m. at the Bronc Trail, 1214 W. Schunior St., Edinburg, near the parking lot on the west side of the medical school. The event is free, and preregistration is not required. March 8 – Attend the Purim Party and learn about this Jewish holiday through stories, activities and snacks at the McAllen Main Library, 4001 N. 23rd St., from 3 to 4 p.m.  The event is for all ages.

April 4 – The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) will hold their 12th Annual Night at the Brew-seum fundraiser at the museum, 1900 W. Nolana Ave. in McAllen. Early bird Brew-seum tickets are on sale at a discount for $75 for general admission and $100 for VIP admission. Ticket prices increase on March 29 to $85 and $110, respectively, and then on April 3 to $100 and $125. Call 956-681-2800 or visit theimasonline.org for information and tickets.

April 7: Kids ages 2 to 5 can pop in for a bubble party and a reading of “Big Bad Bubble” by Adam Rubin during the Young Adventurers workshop at the International Museum of Art & Science, 1900 Nolana Ave., McAllen. They will create their own bubble art to take home. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the class from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.  Cost is $3 for IMAS members and $10 for nonmembers (includes child and adult). April 11 – Dr. Paul Saka discusses ideas of the beginning of life is his talk, “What Came First? Concepts of Life” at 1 p.m. during the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) spring cultural event. The talk is included with museum admission. Call 956-681-2800 for information.   • The Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild meets second Saturday of the month, 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Alamo Rec-Veh Park, 1320 W. Frontage Rd. in Alamo. The Guild promotes quilting in the Rio Grande Valley with guest speakers and educational classes and invites the public to join and attend.
  • The Rio Grande Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets the first Monday of every month, except holidays when it will be held the second Monday, at the Marine Military Academy, 320 Iwo Jima Blvd, Harlingen.
