Events Calendar – March 13, 2020

March 16 – Dr. Camilla Townsend, history professor at Rutgers University will speak on “La Malinche, According to the Indians,” at 4:30 p.m. in the Student Union on the UTRGV Edinburg campus, 1201 W. University Dr., Edinburg.  Originally viewed as a traitor to her people in the conquest of Mexico by Spanish, the lecture takes a different perspective the choices La Malinche made within the context of her life and the people of that period. Free public parking is available at Parking Lot E7.  A social time begins at 4 p.m. preceding the lecture.

March 28 – The 2020 Wipe Out Colon Cancer 5K, sponsored by DHR Health Gastroenterology, begins at 8 a.m. at H-E-B Park, 1616 S. Raul Longoria Rd., Edinburg. The competitive 5K begins at 8:30 a.m., and the Booty Fun Run 1K begins at 9 a.m. The 5K registration fees are $25 per individual are $20 per individual in teams of 10 or more.  A T-shirt and medal is available to the first 500 5K registered participants. The Fun Run is $10, and the Fun Run plus a T-shirt is $20.  Register online at dhrhealth.com/wipeout. To get the team discount, a code is needed.  Call 956-362-3203 to get the code. April

April 4 – The International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) will hold their 12th Annual Night at the Brew-seum fundraiser at the museum, 1900 W. Nolana Ave. in McAllen. Early bird Brew-seum tickets are on sale at a discount for $75 for general admission and $100 for VIP admission. Ticket prices increase on March 29 to $85 and $110, respectively, and then on April 3 to $100 and $125. Call 956-681-2800 or visit theimasonline.org for information and tickets.

April 4 – Persons of all ages can join with University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine students for the monthly Walk with a Future Doc (WWAFD). It begins at 9 a.m. at the Bronc Trail, 1214 W. Schunior St., Edinburg, near the parking lot on the west side of the medical school. The event is free, and preregistration is not required. April 7: Kids ages 2 to 5 can pop in for a bubble party and a reading of “Big Bad Bubble” by Adam Rubin during the Young Adventurers workshop at the International Museum of Art & Science, 1900 Nolana Ave., McAllen. They will create their own bubble art to take home. Children must be accompanied by an adult for the class from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.  Cost is $3 for IMAS members and $10 for nonmembers (includes child and adult). April 11 – Dr. Paul Saka discusses ideas of the beginning of life is his talk, “What Came First? Concepts of Life” at 1 p.m. during the International Museum of Art & Science (IMAS) spring cultural event. The talk is included with museum admission. Call 956-681-2800 for information.   • The Rio Grande Valley Detachment of the Marine Corps League meets the first Monday of every month, except holidays when it will be held the second Monday, at the Marine Military Academy, 320 Iwo Jima Blvd, Harlingen.
