A 71-year-old Weslaco man became the sixth Hidalgo County fatality after testing positive for COVID-19, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez said Tuesday. The unidentified man had underlying medical conditions as did the five others in the county who died from complications related to this strain of coronavirus.
“A key part of our objective from the beginning of this pandemic was to protect our most vulnerable residents,” Cortez said in a news release. “News of Tuesday’s death is another painful reminder that this disease is particularly hard on our elderly and those with underlying medical conditions.”
The Weslaco man was one of five people who tested positive for the disease, according to the county, bringing the total of COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County to 315.
17 people remain in area hospitals and three remain in intensive care units. Seven people were released from isolation Tuesday, bringing the total number of people released from isolation to 162.
