Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday Phase II of Open Texas, adding an updated list and timeline of what types of businesses and activities can resume operations.
Previously, Gov. Abbott’s order included the May 18 opening of gyms, hair salons, barbershops, non-essential manufacturers and other offices. Monday’s order extends it to include massage and “personal care” businesses such as tattoo and piercing studios, laser hair removal, and hair loss treatment. Child care centers and youth clubs will also be allowed to reopen later this month.
“Available information indicates that even as case counts rise, serious cases remain low. It appears that this has led Governor Abbott and his advisors to conclude that Texas should continue to reopen,” Hidalgo County Judge Richard Cortez said in a statement. “As Texas business owners move to welcome back their customers, it is imperative that safe practices are followed by maintaining the required capacity, practicing good hygiene, maintaining physical distancing and wearing facial coverings as much as possible.”
The rest of the Phase II openings will continue over the next two weeks.
