Peñitas reports first case of COVID-19
City of Peñitas officials announced in a Thursday social media post of the first positive case of COVID-19 in the community with a population of approximately 4,400.
“With the increase in available testing throughout the county, a positive case of coronavirus in our community was inevitable,” Peñitas Mayor Rigo Lopez stated in the social media post. “We pray for the health and speedy recovery of the affected individual and their family.”
Lopez urged residents to continue practicing recommended health and safety measures such as staying home when possible, practicing physical distancing and wearing face coverings in public.
“We must continue to do our part as a community to protect ourselves, protect each other, and minimize the risk of spreading this disease,” Lopez added.
On Tuesday evening Hidalgo county announced 10 new cases of COVID-19 in the county, bringing the county total to 467.
The county is expected to update the public on new cases this evening.
