Hidalgo County creates mortgage and rental relief program
On Tuesday, Commissioners Court approved $7,500,000.00 in Federal CARES Act Relief Fund to go towards the newly created COVID-19 Mortgage and Rental Relief Program.
The program is a grant mortgage assistance program designated to help Hidalgo County residents in select cities and rural areas who have been laid off or had their incomes impacted by the spread of COVID-19, according to a county news release.
“This program was specifically designed for families affected by COVID-19,” said Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez. “Hopefully this is only the beginning of more funds to be made available to those that need them the most.”
Funding for this assistance program comes directly from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act.
“We wanted to approve this item right away so all of the suffering and hurting through the Coronavirus distress can be alleviated,” said Hidalgo County Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu.
Details of when and how to qualify for the grant will soon be announced.
Applicants will need to provide proof that they are working reduced hours because of COVID-19’s impact on the local economy. Proof should reflect benefits beginning after March 13.
