Hidalgo County COVID-19 cases surpass 800

The total amount of known COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County has increased to 804 after 45 people tested positive for the diseases, the county announced Tuesday.

In a news release, Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez noted that an increase in testing is leading to more positive results, which comes roughly two weeks after the Memorial Day weekend when much of of the state reopened, which is typically the time period when new cases develop.

“While there may be different theories as to what is causing these numbers to rise, no one is debating that this disease is still here and the risk of infection is still genuine,” Judge Cortez said. “The community must act cautiously and must act responsibly. The best way to do that is to avoid crowds and continue to practice good hygiene.”

Of the new cases, 27 are female, 16 are men and the rest are undisclosed whose ages range from below their 20s to over 70.

The number of tests conducted in the county is now 24,000, putting the rate of positive infection at just above 3.35 percent, below the 10 percent ideal positive rate recommended by the World Health Organization.

There are currently 1,263 tests pending and a total of 343 active cases as 44 people have been hospitalized with complications from the virus; four of those cases are being treated in intensive care units.

Starr County also reported 12 new additional cases Tuesday, bringing the total to 68 with 38 of those cases marked as active.

Hidalgo and Starr County will continue to offer free testing this week with Hidalgo County offering free testing at Granjeno City Hall tomorrow from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Starr County will offer free testing tomorrow at the Escobares Community Center at the same time.

People just need to wear the damn mask and stop being selfish! No one is trying to take your freedoms away by making you wear the mask. It’s just the right thing to do to protect people in your own family and in the community! Who doesn’t have at least one elderly or person with underlying conditions in their family! Plus diabetes runs rampant in the Rio grande valley so bottomline protect those around you and just wear the damn mask. I see way too many who dont do it!

People always think they know best , until
they find themselves trapped in a situation where there is no way out.
It is pointless to try and reason with people like that .
