Alton bakery owner dies after falling from ladder

The 82-year-old owner of an Alton bakery died Tuesday after sustaining injuries from a fall.

Juan M. Valadez, the owner of La India Restaurant and Bakery, was found unresponsive outside his bakery at 3315 E. Main Ave. in Alton. Alton police arrived at the scene at around 11:11 a.m. Tuesday after Valadez fell from a ladder that was on the exterior wall of the business, Alton police Chief Jonathan Flores said in a news release.

Justice of the Peace Luis Garza arrived at the scene and pronounced Valadez dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy.

The Progress Times reached out to La India Restaurant and Bakery for comment but a person answering the phone said the restaurant is closed for the rest of the day.

Alton police are at the scene of a local bakery where an unidentified man died after falling off the roof Tuesday.

Alton police Chief Jonathan Flores confirmed that police were at  La India bakery-located on the intersection of Glasscock Rd. and Mile 5-after a man fell off a ladder while climbing the roof of the building and sustained injuries from the fall. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Flores said.

The Progress Times reached out to La India bakery for comment but a person answering the phone said the store is closed for the rest of the day.

More information will be released in an upcoming news release, Flores said.
