Former state Rep. Sergio Muñoz Sr. dies at 68

Former state Rep. Sergio Muñoz Sr. died Thursday at the age of 68.

The Hidalgo County Democratic Party Muñoz Sr.’s passing on social media after announcing earlier this month that Muñoz Sr. tested positive for COVID-19.

“It is with heavy hearts that the Hidalgo County Democratic Party announces the death of Vice Chair, Sergio Munoz, Sr. He will be immensely missed,” the party said on social media. “Our thoughts and prayers remain with his wife and family. May his soul Rest In Peace. Heartbroken.”

Muñoz Sr. leaves behind his wife, Connie and their daughter, Marla and son, Sergio Muñoz Jr. who followed in his father’s footsteps to become state representative for District 36, his father’s former district, in 2011.

Muñoz, D-Mission, served as representative for Texas’ 36th district between 1993 and 1997.

Many officials such as Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez and state Rep. Terry Canales expressed their condolences to the Muñoz family.

“I am deeply saddened by the loss of Sergio Muñoz Sr,” Judge Cortez said on social media. “I extend my deepest sympathies to the Muñoz family. I hope that our Lord brings the family the much-needed peace during this sad time.”

“My most sincerest condolences to the Munoz family. Rest in peace Sergio Munoz Sr.,” Canales said in a tweet Thursday. “He represented our area in the Texas Legislature from 1993 to 1997. He was a good man and a good friend.”
