Starr County health authority resigns

Starr County’s leading health official resigned Monday.

The county confirmed the resignation in a social media post that was published Monday afternoon and cited a contract dispute for Vasquez’s service as the cause for Vasquez stepping down.

“Starr County Commissioners voted against awarding Vazquez a contract which included compensation for his work, the county said in a news release. “Vazquez has been providing guidance to the county and the community during the current Coronavirus Pandemic. An appointment of a new Health Authority should be forthcoming. We would like to thank Dr. Vazquez for his outstanding service to Starr County.”

Vasquez had been appointed to this position by the county commissioners’ court, the release stated. Commissioners voted against awarding Vazquez a contract Monday which included compensation for his work after providing guidance to the county and the community during the Coronavirus pandemic, the release stated.

An appointment of a new health authority is forthcoming, the county stated.

When reached for comment, Dr. Vasquez said he would hold  a press conference to discuss his resignation Monday evening.
